Patriots Bringing Back Josh McDaniels as Offensive Coordinator
The New England Patriots are bringing back a familiar face to lead their offense. Josh McDaniels, who previously served as the Patriots' offensive coordinator on two separate occasions, is expected to be hired for the same role under head coach Mike Vrabel, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.
McDaniels returns to New England after a brief and unsuccessful stint as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, where he was fired midseason in 2023 after posting a 9-16 record in less than two seasons.
Prior to his time with the Raiders, McDaniels was highly regarded as the offensive coordinator for the Patriots during the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick era. He first took on the role in 2006 and oversaw a record-setting offense in 2007, helping the Patriots come within one game of becoming the second undefeated Super Bowl champion in NFL history.
After three years with the Patriots, McDaniels was hired as the head coach of the Denver Broncos, a position he held for two seasons. He then returned to Foxborough in 2012, where he resumed his role as offensive coordinator, guiding the Brady-led offense to great success. Under McDaniels' leadership, the Patriots' offense finished in the top five in points scored for seven consecutive seasons (2012-2018), and the team won three Super Bowl titles during that span.
In his new role with the Patriots, McDaniels will be tasked with developing young quarterback Drake Maye, who showed promise as a rookie in 2023 with 15 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions. McDaniels has a proven track record of working with young quarterbacks, having coached Mac Jones to a successful rookie season in 2021.
